This thesis examines some common features of Virginia Woolf 's Orlando and Jeanette Winterson's The Passion and explores the significance of those features. Relying upon a text-based approach as well as recent feminist scholarship, particularly the previous criticism of Woolf and Winterson by Christy Burns, the focus is on the way both authors use sexual ambiguity and magical realism as a tool for critiquing binary constructions in gender and society. Chapter I deals with sexual ambiguity in both novels, particularly the issues of androgyny, cross-dressing, and bisexual and homosexual urges and relationships, comparing and contrasting Woolf and Winterson's treatment of sexual ambiguity. Chapter II explores the fantastic or magical realistic elements of Orlando and The Passion. Both novels employ historical settings, use actual historical personages as characters, contain elaborate ice and snow motifs, and utilize other fantastic elements. Chapter III examines the ways the strategies discussed in chapters I and II form a critique of binary notions such as gender, fact and fiction, and fantasy and reality, with an emphasis on how the threads of sexual ambiguity and magical realism work in a similar fashion in both Orlando and The Passion.
