Romantic Outlaws, Beloved Prisons PDF Download. Download free ebook of Romantic Outlaws, Beloved Prisons in PDF format or read online by Martha Grace Duncan 9780814718803 Published on 1996-11-01 by NYU Press

An ex-convict struggles with his addictive yearning for prison. A law-abiding citizen broods over his pleasure in violent, illegal acts. A prison warden loses his job because he is so successful in rehabilitating criminals. These are but a few of the intriguing stories Martha Grace Duncan examines in her bold, interdisciplinary book Romantic Outlaws, Beloved Prisons. Duncan writes: |This is a book about paradoxes and mingled yarns - about the bright sides of dark events, the silver linings of sable clouds.| She portrays upright citizens who harbor a strange liking for criminal deeds, and criminals who conceive of prison in positive terms: as a nurturing mother, an academy, a matrix of spiritual rebirth, or a refuge from life's trivia. In developing her unique vision, Duncan draws on literature, history, psychoanalysis, and law. Her work reveals a nonutopian world in which criminals and non-criminals--while injuring each other in obvious ways--nonetheless live together in a symbiotic as well as an adversarial relationship, needing each other, serving each other, enriching each other's lives in profound and surprising fashion.

Menhennet traces the main strands of thought and interest that preoccupy the Romantic writers: the revolutionary attitude that is differentiated from that of writers like Byron by the lack of emphasis on individualism; the dualism of the bourgeois world and the |inner self;| the interest in language as an agency for the regeneration of the German spirit; and the concentration on folk themes and the idea of Wanderung.

Book Our Lady of the Harbour PDF Download

Our Lady of the Harbour PDF Download. Download free ebook of Our Lady of the Harbour in PDF format or read online by Charles de Lint 9780920623800 Published on 2017 by

She'd been underlake when the sound of his voice drew her up from the cold and the dark, up into the moonlight, bobbing in the white-capped waves; listening, swallowing that golden sound of strings and voice, and he so handsome and all alone on the shore. This modern take on Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid reveals the aching beauty and peril of falling in love. A finalist for the 1992 World Fantasy Award, this novella was originally published as a limited edition chapbook by Axolotl Press (1991), and later appeared in de Lint's acclaimed first Newford collection, Dreams Underfoot (1993). Charles de Lint is the modern master of urban fantasy. Folktale, myth, fairy tale, dreams, urban legend--all of it adds up to pure magic in de Lint's vivid, original world. No one does it better.--Alice Hoffman Charles de Lint writes like a magician. He draws out the strange inside our own world, weaving stories that feel more real than we are when we read them. He is, simply put, the best.--Holly Black In a culture that privileges detachment and irony Charles de Lint dares to write with passion and conviction, insisting that truth, compassion, and the creation of beauty in the world are things that matter. He's not on a soapbox, he's not didactic, he's just telling stories--but those stories are searing.--Terri Windling A man who makes the world a better place than he found it.--Jane Yolen De Lint's evocative images, both ordinary and fantastic, jolt the imagination.--Publishers Weekly What makes de Lint's particular brand of fantasy so catchy is his attention to the ordinary. Like great writers of magic realism, he writes about people in the world we know, encountering magic as a part of that world. Fairy tales come true, and their magic affects realistic characters full of particular lusts and fears.--Booklist, American Library Association To read de Lint is to fall under the spell of a master storyteller, to be reminded of the greatness of life, of the beauty and majesty lurking in shadows and empty doorways.--Quill and Quire De Lint's elegant prose and effective storytelling continue to transform the mundane into the magical at every turn.--Library Journal Charles de Lint's greatest strength...is his obvious love for his characters, and empathy for people generally. ...he is showing us people living up to their potential, rather than down to it. And that is what makes de Lint's books rewarding.--Locus Magazine Every story, every book I've read by Charles de Lint has touched me in some way--his words make me care very deeply for his characters and their surroundings.--Rambles Magazine Charles de Lint is one of those rare authors whose work is envied by writers and book editors as much as by his fans...if you don't find something in the plot to keep you turning pages ravenously (and I'm sure you will), then the colourful characters...will charm you thoroughly.--The SF Site Charles de Lint has won the World Fantasy, Aurora and Sunburst awards, among many others.

Book Retelling Histories PDF Download

Retelling Histories PDF Download. Download free ebook of Retelling Histories in PDF format or read online by Sanjot Aroon Walawalkar Published on 2005 by

Abstract: Magical realism enjoys an important position in contemporary world literature. Its unique characteristics, such as amalgamation of the fantastic and the mundane, coexistence of diverse perspectives, and inclusion of the dichotomous aspects of everyday human experience, offer strategies by which conventional assumptions about |reality,| and |history| can be questioned and reexamined, and alternative viewpoints can be presented. Gunter Grass in Die Blechtrommel and Salman Rushdie in Midnight's Children employ magical realism to redescribe historically specifiable events and offer fresh and alternative perspectives to dominant narratives of history. Grass's Die Blechtrommel explores that part of German history which includes World War I, the rise and fall of Nazism, and World War II. Rushdie's Midnight's Children covers the part of Indian history from the struggle to free India from the imperial British rule, up until the time when democracy was suspended under Indira Gandhi. In their novels, Grass and Rushdie question the veracity and objectivity of historical writing. Both writers aim at educating their readers in hopes of preventing the repetition of tragic events. In this thesis, I explore the various magical realist techniques used by Grass and Rushdie in their respective novels. I discuss the historical development of magical realism, the importance of retelling history in literature, and the commonalities shared by Grass and Rushdie. I further elaborate how these writers use magical realist techniques to redescribe past events, to question the conventional views of history, and to challenge the authority of dominant structures and ideologies. In doing so, Grass and Rushdie foster a critical reserve and a reasonable approach in their readers as well as keep the past alive in the consciousness of the people.

Book German Aesthetic and Literary Criticism PDF Download

German Aesthetic and Literary Criticism PDF Download. Download free ebook of German Aesthetic and Literary Criticism in PDF format or read online by Kathleen M. Wheeler 9780521236317 Published on 1984-09-13 by Cambridge University Press

This anthology, part of a three-volume series devoted to German aesthetic and literary criticism collects extracts from the leading Romantic critics in Germany: Friedrich and August Schlegel, Ludwig Tieck, Jean Pual Richter, Freidrich von Hardenberg and Lark Solger. There are also excerpts from the writings of Goethe. The volume provides an overview of the immensely rich literary criticism of the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century in Germany, which has been of seminal influence on the history of European literary criticism. The extracts bear witness to the enormous impact which Shakespeare had upon German intellectual life during this period, for it was his work which served to liberate artists and theorists alike from the norms and values of neo-classicism. Dr Wheeler has written a substantial introduction to the collection, explaining some of the more complex ideas contained therein and placing the authors in a wider intellectual context. The volume will be an especially useful textbook for students of Romantic literature, modern literary theory and the history of literary criticism, whether they be in departments of English, German or comparative literature.

Download free ebook of Romantic Colonization and British Anti-Slavery in PDF format or read online by Deirdre Coleman,Lecturer in the Department of English Deirdre Coleman 9780521632133 Published on 2005-01-13 by Cambridge University Press

The loss of Britain's North American colonies sparked an intense debate about the nature of colonization in the period 1770-1800. Drawing on archival research into colonies in Africa and Australia, including Sierra Leone and Botany Bay, Deirdre Coleman shows how the growing popularity of the anti-slavery movement gave a utopian cast to the debate about colonization. This utopianism can be seen most clearly in Romantic attempts to found an empire without slaves, a new world which would also encompass revolutionary sexual, racial and labour arrangements. From Henry Smeathman and John Clarkson in Sierra Leone to Arthur Phillip and William Dawes in Botany Bay, Coleman analyses the impact of the discourses and ideals underlying Romantic colonization. She argues that these paved the way for racial strife in West Africa and the eventual dispossession of Australia's native people.

Book The Romantic Performative PDF Download

The Romantic Performative PDF Download. Download free ebook of The Romantic Performative in PDF format or read online by Angela Esterhammer 9780804780148 Published on 2001 by Stanford University Press

|The Romantic Performative| develops a new context and methodology for reading Romantic literature by exploring philosophies of language from the period 1785-1835. It reveals that the concept of the performative, debated by twentieth-century theorists from J. L. Austin to Judith Butler, has a much greater relevance for Romantic literature than has been realized, since Romantic philosophy of language was dominated by the idea that something |happens| when words are spoken. By presenting Romantic philosophy as a theory of the performative, and Romantic literature in terms of that theory, this book uncovers the historical roots of twentieth-century ideas about speech acts and performativity. Romantic linguistic philosophy already focused on the relationship between speaker and hearer, describing speech as an act that establishes both subjectivity and intersubjective relations and theorizing reality as a verbal construct. But Romantic theorists considered utterance, the context of utterance, and the positions and identities of speaker and hearer to be much more fluid and less stable than modern analytic philosophers tend to make them. Romantic theories of language therefore yield a definition of the |Romantic performative| as an utterance that creates an object in the world, instantiates the relationship between speaker and hearer, and even founds the subjectivity of the speaker in the moment when the utterance occurs. The author traces the Romantic performative through its diverse development in the moral, political, and legal philosophy of Reid, Bentham, Kant and the German Idealists, Humboldt, and Coleridge, then explores its significance in literary texts by Coleridge, Godwin, Holderlin, and Kleist. These readings demonstrate that Romantic writers mounted a deeper investigation than previously realized into the way the act of speaking generates subjective identity, intersubjective relations, and even objective reality. The project of the book is to read the language of Romanticism as performative and to recognize among its achievements the historical founding of the discourse of performativity itself.

Laura Esquivel's debut novel Como agua para chocolate took the literary World by storm with its unique yet familiar story of love and longing on the Mexican border during the perilous times of the Mexican Revolution. This author's narrative, seeped in magic and peppered with Mexico's culinary customs, was quickly taken to the silver screen where Tita and Pedro's forbidden relationship would captivate audiences not only in its native country, but around the globe - cementing Equivel's name within the ever-growing canon of Latin American women writers. Nathanial Gardner introduces the reader to both the novel and the film version of Como agua para chocolate and examines not only key themes, such as rebellion and tradition, but also its style and main characters. This narrative's acclaimed use of food and other gastronomic elements are taken into consideration as well as the significance of magic realism to this text. As this novel/film combination follow each other in an unusually close manner, the first part analyses many of the components the two share while the second part of this study emphasizes the cinematic mechanisms that are unique to this particular presentation of Esquivel's most widely-studied creation to date.

Book The American Gothic and Magical Realism in Octavia Butler's Kindred and Wild Seed Through Perspectives of Race and Gender PDF Download

Octavia E. Butler was one of a few contemporary African American science fiction writers. Her literature often focuses on gender and race which evolved out of colonialism and slavery in America. Butler used the past and present experiences of African Americans to explore these issues by creating alternate worlds. Butler wrote estrangement science fiction and her novels examine societal issues and their effects on humanity. Her science fiction is comprised of the fantastic, the mystic, and the supernatural which are elements also found within the literary modes of the America Gothic and magical realism. These literary styles are known historically for discussing topics of race, gender, class slavery, and colonialism. Magical realism and the American Gothic often use the term |Other| to explore these topics and their effects on groups' identities. By cleverly intertwining these two modes within her science fiction, Butler was able to augment her science fiction and explore issues of race and gender in African American history and present. Using examples from Octavia Butler's novels Kindred and Wild Seed, I will illustrate how Butler has used elements of magical realism and the American Gothic to examine themes that her reading audience often has difficulty discussing and accepting

The Famished Road PDF Download. Download free ebook of The Famished Road in PDF format or read online by Ben Okri 9781504040204 Published on 2016-10-25 by Open Road Media

Winner of the Man Booker Prize: “Okri shares with García Márquez a vision of the world as one of infinite possibility. . . . A masterpiece” (The Boston Sunday Globe). Azaro is a spirit child, an abiku, existing, according to the African tradition, between life and death. Born into the human world, he must experience its joys and tragedies. His spirit companions come to him often, hounding him to leave his mortal world and join them in their idyllic one. Azaro foresees a trying life ahead, but he is born smiling. This is his story. When President Bill Clinton first went to Africa he quoted from The Famished Road, which has inspired literature, art, politics, and pop songs—and even been referenced in an episode of The Simpsons. A transformative story for all ages and all times, it means many things to many people. Few contemporary novels have aroused as much passion as this one. Indeed, twenty-five years after its breakout publication, the iconic story of Azaro’s travels continues to mesmerize new generations. For readers of Things Fall Apart or One Hundred Years of Solitude, this Man Booker Prize–winning blend of fabulism and gritty realism by the Nigerian author of Astonishing the Gods and Dangerous Love is a “dazzling, hypnotic” journey through Africa that “weaves the humblest detail with the most extravagant flight of fancy to create an astonishing fictional tapestry” (San Francisco Chronicle). Already considered a classic of world literature, it is “a masterpiece if ever one existed” (The Boston Sunday Globe).

Romantic Image PDF Download. Download free ebook of Romantic Image in PDF format or read online by Frank Kermode 9781134506132 Published on 2012-10-02 by Routledge

For the past four decades Frank Kermode, critic and writer, has steadily established himself as one of the most brilliant minds of his generation. Author and editor of over forty books, his prodigious output includes some of the best literary criticism to be published. Questioning the public's harsh perception of 'the artist', Kermode at the same time gently pokes fun at artists' own, often inflated, self-image. He identifies what has become one of the defining characteristics of the Romantic tradition - the artist in isolation and the emerging power of the imagination. The ingeniousness of Kermode's argument and the polish and wit of the writing all serve to identify the book as one of his finest offerings. Back in print after an absence of over a decade, The Romantic Image is quintessential Kermode. Small wonder then that this, one of his earliest works, is such a classic. Enlightenment has seldom been so enjoyable!

Book Romantic Ecocriticism PDF Download

Romantic Ecocriticism PDF Download. Download free ebook of Romantic Ecocriticism in PDF format or read online by Dewey W. Hall 9781498518024 Published on 2016-03-15 by Rowman & Littlefield

Romantic Ecocriticism: Origins and Legacies is unique due to its rare assemblage of essays, which has not appeared within an edited collection before. Romantic Ecocriticism is distinct because the essays in the collection develop transnational and transhistorical approaches to the proto-ecological early environmental aspects in British and American Romanticism. First, the edition’s transnational approach is evident through transatlantic connections such as, but are not limited to, comparisons among the following writers: William Wordsworth, William Howitt, and Henry D. Thoreau; John Clare and Aldo Leopold; Charles Darwin and Ralph W. Emerson. Second, the transhistorical approach of RomanticEcocriticism is evident in connections among the following writers: William Wordsworth and Emily Bronte; Thomas Malthus and George Gordon Byron; James Hutton and Percy Shelley; Erasmus Darwin and Charlotte Smith; Gilbert White and Dorothy Wordsworth among others. Thus, Romantic Ecocriticism offers a dynamic collection of essays dedicated to links between scientists and literary figures interested in natural history.
