Book Political Ideas in the Romantic Age PDF Download

Political Ideas in the Romantic Age PDF Download. Download free ebook of Political Ideas in the Romantic Age in PDF format or read online by Isaiah Berlin 9780691126951 Published on 2008 by

It is sometimes thought that the renowned essayist Isaiah Berlin (1909-1997) was incapable of writing a big book. But in fact he developed some of his most important essays--including |Two Concepts of Liberty| and |Historical Inevitability|--from a book-length manuscript that he intended to publish but later set aside. Published here for the first time, Political Ideas in the Romantic Age is the only book in which Berlin lays out in one continuous account most of his key insights about the history of ideas in the period that he made his own--the Romantic age. Distilling his formative early work in the history of ideas, the book also contains much that is not found elsewhere in his writings. The last of Berlin's posthumous books, it is of great interest both for his treatment of the subject and for what it reveals about his intellectual development. Written for a series of lectures at Bryn Mawr College in 1952, and heavily revised and expanded by Berlin afterward, the book argues that the political ideas of the Romantic age are still largely our own--down to the language and metaphors they are expressed in. Vividly expounding the central political ideas of leading European thinkers in the period 1760-1830, including Helvetius, Condorcet, Rousseau, Saint-Simon, Hegel, Schelling, and Fichte, the book is written in Berlin's characteristically accessible style. The book has been carefully prepared by Berlin's longtime editor Henry Hardy, and Joshua L. Cherniss provides an illuminating introduction that sets it in the context of Berlin's life and work.

Romantic Prose Fiction PDF Download. Download free ebook of Romantic Prose Fiction in PDF format or read online by Gerald Ernest Paul Gillespie,Manfred Engel,Bernard Dieterle 9789027234568 Published on 2008 by John Benjamins Publishing

In this volume a team of three dozen international experts presents a fresh picture of literary prose fiction in the Romantic age seen from cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives. The work treats the appearance of major themes in characteristically Romantic versions, the power of Romantic discourse to reshape imaginative writing, and a series of crucial reactions to the impact of Romanticism on cultural life down to the present, both in Europe and in the New World. Through its combination of chapters on thematic, generic, and discursive features, Romantic Prose Fiction achieves a unique theoretical stance, by considering the opinions of primary Romantics and their successors not as guiding “truths” by which to define the permanent “meaning” of Romanticism, but as data of cultural history that shed important light on an evolving civilization.SPECIAL OFFER: 30% discount for a complete set order (5 vols.).The Romanticism series in the Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages is the result of a remarkable international collaboration. The editorial team coordinated the efforts of over 100 experts from more than two dozen countries to produce five independently conceived, yet interrelated volumes that show not only how Romanticism developed and spread in its principal European homelands and throughout the New World, but also the ways in which the affected literatures in reaction to Romanticism have redefined themselves on into Modernism. A glance at the index of each volume quickly reveals the extraordinary richness of the series' total contents. Romantic Irony sets the broader experimental parameters of comparison by concentrating on the myriad expressions of “irony” as one of the major impulses in the Romantic philosophical and artistic revolution, and by combining cross-cultural and interdisciplinary studies with special attention also to literatures in less widely diffused language streams. Romantic Drama traces creative innovations that deeply altered the understanding of genre at large, fed popular imagination through vehicles like the opera, and laid the foundations for a modernist theater of the absurd. Romantic Poetry demonstrates deep patterns and a sharing of crucial themes of the revolutionary age which underlie the lyrical expression that flourished in so many languages and environments. Nonfictional Romantic Prose assists us in coping with the vast array of writings from the personal and intimate sphere to modes of public discourse, including Romanticism's own self-commentary in theoretical statements on the arts, society, life, the sciences, and more. Nor are the discursive dimensions of imaginative literature neglected in the closing volume, Romantic Prose Fiction, where the basic Romantic themes and story types (the romance, novel, novella, short story, and other narrative forms) are considered throughout Europe and the New World. This enormous realm is seen not just in terms of Romantic theorizing, but in the light of the impact of Romantic ideas and narration on later generations. As an aid to readers, the introduction to Romantic Prose Fiction explains the relationships among the volumes in the series and carries a listing of their tables of contents in an appendix. No other series exists comparable to these volumes which treat the entirety of Romanticism as a cultural happening across the whole breadth of the “Old” and “New” Worlds and thus render a complex picture of European spiritual strivings in the late eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, a heritage still very close to our age.

Dreaming of Home PDF Download. Download free ebook of Dreaming of Home in PDF format or read online by L. Tamara Kendig Published on 1998 by

This dissertation defines magic realism as a product of the colonized imagination that constructs alternative |spaces| in the local landscape as a means of cultural survival. These spaces become the site of transcendent mythical experiences, linking the local population to a strong cultural ancestry predating the colonial event. While the term |magic realism| is often confined to certain modernist and postmodern Latin American writers, reading it as a product of colonial experience broadens its definition, making feasible its application to other marginalized populations, such as Faulkner's postbellum South, Morrison's Midwestern African American communities, and the Chicano Southwest described by John Nichols. These works transcribe an impulse toward the creation of a sense of indigenousness, source of the marvelousness at the core of culture that I term |vernacular magic.| These writers, in the act of describing their homesite as marvelous, participate in constructing home for the marginalized groups for whom they write. Using Deleuze and Guattari's term |becoming-minor,| I show how Faulkner articulates not the position of minority groups, i.e. the African Americans that lurk in the shadows of many of his novels (though, conspicuously, not The Hamlet), but the position of the marginalized southerner victimized by the encroaching Northern industrialized economic system. We see in Faulkner the beginnings of a magical landscape, one that speaks to the strength of the community and its ancestral culture. Gabriel Garcia Maquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude amplifies Faulkner's efforts through a similar use of marvelous landscape. The focus of Morrison's Sula is the community of the Bottom, itself a marginalized location on the outskirts of Medallion, Ohio. Toni Morrison's Sula follows what has developed into magic realist pattern: articulations of a borderland where community |difference| signifies solidarity in the face of situational colonization. John Nichols' The Milagro Beanfield War depicts a battle for natural resources between Chicano peasants in New Mexico and Yankee land developers. The myths of the |native| community, including the particular cosmology and sense of indigenousness, inspire the marvelous victory.

The urban landscape in the United States has changed drastically over the past 50 years, and along with massive suburbanization and downtown renewal, there has been a restructuring of economic and political organizations and their interrelations. Benjamin Kleinberg has written this book out of his dissatisfaction with two of the most predominant perspectives on urban policy and development: contemporary ecological and neo-Marxist. He offers an interorganizational//policy perspective not as an alternative theory but as a structural framework for analyzing the shaping and implementing of urban policy.

Reconsidering Informality PDF Download. Download free ebook of Reconsidering Informality in PDF format or read online by Karen Tranberg Hansen,Mariken Vaa 9789171065186 Published on 2004 by Nordic Africa Institute

This book brings together two bodies of research on urban Africa that have tended to be separate, studies of urban land use and housing and studies of work and livelihoods. Africa's future will be increasingly urban, and the inherited legal, institutional and financial arrangements for managing urban development are inadequate. Access to employment, shelter and services is precarious for most urban residents. The result is the phenomenal growth of the informal city. Extra-legal housing and unregistered economic activities proliferate and basic urban services are increasingly provided informally. Recent decades of neo-liberal political and economic reforms have increased social inequality across urban space. After an introductory chapter by the editors, the contributions are grouped into the following sections: - LOCALITY, PLACE, AND SPACE - ECONOMY, WORK, AND LIVELIHOODS - LAND, HOUSING, AND PLANNING The case studies are drawn from a diverse set of cities on the African continent. A central theme is how practices that from an official standpoint are illegal or extra-legal do not only work but are considered legitimate by the actors concerned. Another is how the informal city is not exclusively the domain of the poor, but also provides shelter and livelihoods for better-off segments of the urban population.

Book Gender, Magic, and Moral Authority in Latin American and Russian Magical Realism PDF Download

Gender, Magic, and Moral Authority in Latin American and Russian Magical Realism PDF Download. Download free ebook of Gender, Magic, and Moral Authority in Latin American and Russian Magical Realism in PDF format or read online by Stephanie Luna Padilla Published on 2011 by

This study investigates the intersection of gender, magic, and moral authority in three magical realist novels, namely Soviet author Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, Columbian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Chilean novelist Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits. It appraises the literary criticism that has been produced about each novel, and assumptions inherent in the criticism. This study thus investigates not only the intersection of gender, magic, and moral authority in each novel, but also critiques the arguments produced by literary critics. The analysis contained in this study differs fundamentally from much criticism produced in the past in that it seeks to examine these magical realist novels from the perspective of an ethic of care, traditionally coded as feminine, and with the assumption that the feminine realm is not inherently inferior to the masculine. This thesis accordingly attempts to reinvestigate appraisals of the moral worth of characters within each novel by arguing that it is impossible to do so correctly unless it is via the feminine ethic of care, rather than the more commonly used masculine ethic of justice. Ultimately, it concludes that Bulgakov, Garcia Marquez, and Allende are not advocating that women reject the feminine realm entirely, that such a sacrifice is necessary, but that they are instead advocating that women bring the values and morality of the feminine realm with them into the public, thereby transforming and improving it. They are advocating, thus, that the feminine realm be united with the masculine. The first novel examined in depth is The Master and Margarita. Criticism of the text typically identifies Yeshua, the character who is based on Jesus Christ and is thus closely associated with the masculine realm and the masculine ethic of justice, as the moral center of the novel. The present thesis asserts, in contrast, that the moral center is Margarita Nikolaevna, who is closely associated with the feminine realm and who operates via the ethic of care. Next, this study holds that criticism of Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude has been erroneous in its affirmations that the novel is misogynistic to its core. Garcia Marquez, this thesis maintains, judges the moral worth of his characters via the ethic of care, via the importance they place on relationships, care, and connection, and greatly values the feminine realm. Thus, his novel is a fundamentally feminist one. Last to be examined is Allende's The House of the Spirits. Clara Trueba has generally been marginalized, like Margarita and Ursula, because she embraces the feminine realm and operates via the ethic of justice, while her granddaughter Alba Trueba, who critics erroneously maintain rejects the feminine realm and takes her place within the masculine, has received a great deal of critical attention and approbation. This thesis rereads The House of the Spirits by placing Clara once more at the heart of the novel, and by pointing out that Alba does not at all reject the feminine realm. This thesis thus strives to arrive at a fairer appraisal of the female and male characters in each novel and to question criticism of magical realist texts that have led to misunderstandings of these texts on the most fundamental level.

Book Gender in the Post-Fordist Urban PDF Download

Gender in the Post-Fordist Urban PDF Download. Download free ebook of Gender in the Post-Fordist Urban in PDF format or read online by Marguerite van den Berg 9783319525334 Published on 2017-03-02 by Springer

This book investigates the gender revolution in urban planning and public policy. Building on feminist urban studies, it introduces the concept of genderfication as a means of understanding the consequences of post-Fordist gender notions for the city. It traces the changes in western urban gender relations, arguing that in the post-Fordist urban landscape gender is used for urban planning and public policy – both to rebrand a city’s image and to produce space for gender-equal ideals, often at the cost of precarious urban populations. This is a topic that remains largely unexplored in critical urban studies and radical geography. Chapters cover how Jane Jacobs’ perspectives provide an alternative to the patriarchal modernist city for contemporary planners and using Rotterdam as a case study Van Den Berg discusses why new urban planning methods focus on attracting women and children as new urbanites. Topics include: forms of place marketing, gender as a repertoire for contemporary urban Imagineering and the concept of urban re-generation. The final chapter investigates how cities aiming to redefine themselves imagine future populations and how they design social policies that explicitly and particularly target women as mothers. Scholars in all fields of urban studies will find this work thought-provoking, instructive and informative.
